Alejandro Monteverde, the director of 2023’s surprise box office hit “Sound of Freedom,” has set his next film, “Cabrini,” for a theatrical release on March 8, 2024.

From “Sound of Freedom” indie distributor Angel Studios, “Cabrini” tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian American religious sister who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and became the first U.S. citizen to be canonized a saint by the Catholic Church. Per the movie’s press release, Cabrini “fought the establishment and became the greatest social entrepreneur of the 19th century.”

“Through her willpower, courage, compassion and business skill, she overcame sexism and violent anti-Italian bigotry while fighting against an establishment seeking to hold her back,” reads the release.

Cristiana Dell’Anna stars as Cabrini, while John Lithgow, David Morse, Giancarol Giannini and Federico Castelluccio round out the cast.

“Francesca Cabrini is one of the most inspiring and influential figures in modern history, and yet few know her story. Faced with seemingly insurmountable life obstacles, Cabrini chose instead to focus on how she could change the status quo in her time, and her impact on the world is still felt today,” said Liz Ellis, Angel Studios’ chief operating officer. “We’re thrilled to be able to share her unbelievable story in theaters this spring. This will be our second collaboration with ‘Sound of Freedom’ director Alejandro Monteverde — and the Angel Guild gave this film even higher ratings than ‘Sound of Freedom.’ Our community has high expectations for this project.”

Monteverde’s latest movie, the child trafficking thriller “Sound of Freedom” starring Jim Caviezel, opened to nearly $20 million in the U.S. and Canada and has since brought in just under $182 million at the domestic box office.
