2023 MTV VMAs Ratings: Up 37% From 2022
With appearances from Taylor Swift and NSYNC and performanced from Shakira, Demi Lovato and Doja Cat, this year’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony brought in 37% more viewers than the 2022 ceremony.
Tuesday’s show was watched by 865,000 people compared to 630,000 the year before. Based on fast national data from Nielsen, these statistics account for both telecasts’ viewership on the MTV linear channel alone, with simulcast data from other platforms yet to come.
2023’s VMAs also improved on 2022’s demographic ratings, nabbing a 1.03 in the key 18-49 demo and a 1.14 among adults age 18-34. This marks a 77% improvement from last year’s 0.58 rating in 18-49 and a 118% improvement from last year’s 0.52 18-34 rating. In fact, these ratings are the show’s best since 2020 and 2019, respectively.
MTV also boasts that the VMAs’ 18-49 and 18-34 ratings made way for the network’s best primetime averages for a Tuesday night since 2014 — though this achievement was more or less a given, as the VMAs tend to be MTV’s biggest telecast of the year and have not aired on a Tuesday between 2014 and now. Those high-scoring 2014 telecasts (a 1.329 in adults 18-49 and a 1.353 in adults 18-34), MTV says, represent “various programming including premieres and repeats.”
