‘Dune 2’ Continues Sandstorm at U.K., Ireland Box Office
Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part II” continued its reign at the U.K. and Ireland box office for the second weekend in a row with £5.9 million ($7.5 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.
Denis Villeneuve’s anticipated sequel has an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem reprising their roles from the first film, with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux joining them. After two weekends, the film’s total stands at £19.4 million in the territory.
In second place, Studiocanal’s “Wicked Little Letters” collected £898,390 in its third weekend for a total of £6 million. In its fourth weekend, Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” earned £830,382 in third position for a total of £15.1 million. In fourth place, Universal’s “Migration” took in £671,666 in its sixth weekend for a total of £18.3 million.
Lionsgate’s “Imaginary” debuted in fifth position with £652,808. There was one more debut in the top 10 – Bakrania Media’s Bollywood film “Shaitaan,” starring Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan and Jyotika, which collected £114,929 in sixth place.
Coming up this weekend are a trio of titles feted at Cannes. Signature Entertainment is bowing Warwick Thornton’s “The New Boy,” starring Cate Blanchett, Aswan Reid, Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair. The film recounts the events that occur after a nine-year-old Aboriginal Australian orphan boy arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun. Picturehouse Entertainment is releasing Japanese auteur Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Cannes winner “Monster,” where a mother demands answers from her son’s teacher when her son begins acting strangely. And We Are Parable is opening “Banel & Adama,” where a young couple in Senegal must contend with the disapproval of their remote village.
Universal is opening Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls,” starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, where in search of a fresh start, two women embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, Florida. However, things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.
Brass Mill Media is releasing CPH DOX documentary “Phantom Parrot,” where the revelation of a top-secret British surveillance program brings down the dominoes in a film about technology, rights and structural racism, and about a man with the courage to speak out.
The Bollywood release this weekend is Moviegoers Entertainment’s “Yodha,” headlined by Sidharth Malhotra, where terrorists hijack a passenger plane and an off-duty soldier aboard devises a strategy to defeat the them and ensure the passengers’ survival when the engine fails.
Park Circus is re-releasing David Fincher’s seminal “Fight Club,” starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.
